WHAT ARE NATURAL RESOURCES?

Natural resources are Earth materials used to support life and meet the needs of people. Any organic material used by humans can be considered as a natural resource. Natural resources include oil, coal, natural gas, metals, stone, and sand. Air, sunlight, soil, and water are other natural resources.

WHAT ARE THE DIFFERENT TYPES OF NATURAL RESOURCES?

Oil, coal, natural gas, metals, stone and sand are natural resources. Other natural resources are air, sunlight, soil and water. Animals, birds, fish and plants are natural resources as well. Natural resources are used to make food, fuel and raw materials for the production of goods.

WHAT IS THE IMPORTANCE OF NATURAL RESOURCES?

Natural resources are essential to civilization as we know it, and are the basis for economy and survival. Resources such as bauxite, iron, and copper form the basis of everyday items, while water, soil, and salt are required for life. It is humanity's duty to protect and conserve natural resources.  This is why natural resources are important to us:-

  • Resources are important for us as we utilize them to satisfy our wants.
  • Many minerals like iron, copper, mica etc. are used in industries for manufacturing various goods.
  • Minerals like coal and petroleum are used for the generation of electricity.
  • Natural resources like water and air are Important for human life. Life cannot exist on earth in the absence of these resources.
  • Minerals like nitrogen are used in manufacturing
  • fertilizers which help in increasing the fertility of the soil. This results in increased agricultural production.

TYPES OF NATURAL RESOURCES

Resources are characterized as renewable or nonrenewable; a renewable resource can replenish itself at the rate it is used, while a nonrenewable resource has a limited supply. Renewable resources include timber, wind, and solar while nonrenewable resources include coal and natural gas.

NATURAL RESOURCES AND THEIR IMPORTANCE IN RELATION WITH U.S.
The U.S. has abundant supplies of coal, copper, lead, iron, natural gas, timber, bauxite, and uranium. 18% of the land in the U.S. is arable land. The U.S. is a major exporter of technology, consumer goods, information systems, and foodstuffs.
The U.S. is the second leading country worldwide based on natural resource value after Russia. Among the main contributors to the United States' natural resource value are coal, timber, natural gas, gold, and copper.

CONCLUSION
Of all the natural resources used by humans, two stand out as having the biggest impact on human survival and environmental quality. Mineral and fossil fuel resources are largely responsible for moving human civilization from hunter-gatherer societies to heavily industrialized urban ones. Mineral resources provided efficient implements for procuring food, conducting warfare, and building large structures. Fossil fuels gave humans the energy needed to power heavy duty machinery, produce electricity, improve transportation, and maintain large urbanized cities. Today, demand for these vital resources continues to grow, while the Earth’s supply does not. The cultures that took the most advantage of these resources have caused their depletion through overconsumption and environmental destruction. We should protect our natural resources and should start using inexhaustible natural resources like solar and wind energy than using exhaustible natural resources like coal and petroleum.
